God Called Samuel to serve him (Page 132-133)
The bible uses literary forms to get the message across but as Israel grew historical writings began. The first and second books of Samuel, along with other books in the bible have historical writings.
Hannah pray for a child and promised God that she would dedicate the child to God and her son was called Samuel. Hannah brought Samuel to the shrine at Shiloh and dedicated him to God's service. God spoke to Samuel and Samuel became God's prophet.
The people of Israel lost connection with God, the Philistines took their land and the ark of covenant. Samuel was called to take on the leadership of the Israel people, he brought back the ark of the covenant and the people back to God.
Saul became Israel's first king (page 134-135)
Samuel was growing older so the people of Israel wanted a King so God agreed and he chose Saul. Samuel anointed Saul which symbolizes Saul's consecration to God's service. Saul listen to God through Samuel but later stopped listening to God's word.
God chose David to lead Israel (page 136-137)
God was not happy with Saul so God sent for Samuel to meet with Jesse. God chose another person to lead his people. So Samuel meet with Jesse and his sons. God told Samuel to anoint the chosen one. Jesse's youngest son was chosen and Samuel anointed him. At this time the Philistines were again trying to over come the Israelites. Goliath a strong Philistine which was part of their army was insulting the Israelites. Everyone was afraid of him but God spoke to David and told him he will protect him, so he stood up to him and kill him. David did not doubt God and was fully trusting him.
David was declared the king of Israel (page 138-139)
The people of Israel chose David to be their leader. He drove the Philistines from central Israel, captured the areas ruled by the canaanites and Israel became a nation united. David conquered the city of Jerusalem and is the capital of all Israel and is centrally located so they named it the City of David. David did a lot of good for the people of Israel and for God but he had some weakness. He fell in love with another man's wife Bathsheba. So he had the army kill her husband Uriah. God was displeased with David but David asked God for forgiveness. God always forgives those who are sorry for their sins so he forgave David.
